An experience with soul, overshadowed by its own marketing Cobalt Miner is the classic example of a game that ended up falling victim to its own synopsis. It didn’t need grandiose promises in the store description to sell itself, because what’s inside is a game with a lot of soul. If you ignore the text on the page and just play, you’ll find a truly charming experience. The standout feature is the futuristic, post-apocalyptic atmosphere, built with stunning minimalist pixel art that strongly reminds me of Titan Souls (another excellent indie game). To enhance the immersion, the voice acting is surprisingly competent and well-executed, helping to give weight to the narrative and the characters. The gameplay loop is simple, relaxing, and very satisfying for passing a few stress-free hours, all at a very affordable price that’s even more justified during sales. Cobalt Miner’s real stumbling block is trying to bite off more than it can chew. For many people, the frustration stems precisely from this disconnect between the marketing hype and the actual game. The so-called “vast open world,” in practice, is a map you can traverse from end to end in no time. Resource mining is limited to just three basic ores. Another major flaw is the game’s economic balance: the long-awaited industrial automation ends up being overshadowed by slow drones that push you back into manual labor. Worse still, the entire crafting system loses its purpose when you do the math and realize it’s much faster and cheaper to simply buy ready-made items than to set up a production line for them. A simple tweak to this math would change the game’s dynamics for the better. Otherwise, the interface has a few glitches and silly HUD flaws along the way, but these are just visual hiccups that don’t quite ruin the experience. Ultimately, if *Cobalt Miner* were marketed solely as a short, relaxing experience, it would certainly avoid most of the criticism it has received. I recommend the game not for what it promises, but for what it actually delivers. It’s a shame that the weight of an overblown promise takes the shine off such a short, yet vibrant experience (which is actually ironic, considering the story’s bleak and lifeless world… hahaha).
