Solitaire: Kingdom in Chains was a really pleasant surprise. I already dig games that are good for short sessions, and this one fits the bill perfectly. It became my go-to game to open up in the middle of work, play a couple of stages just to clear my head, and then get back to what I was doing.
The art grabs you right away. It has a ton of personality, and the soundtrack ties it all together beautifully. The whole vibe is like a slightly dark fairytale, but in a way that works weirdly well for a solitaire game.
I was really glad they added achievements in the last update. It’s always nice to have an extra excuse to go back, hunt for that 100%, and wrap things up especially in a game built around quick stages.
The boss fights ended up being the best part. Every time one started, I’d get that immediate panic of "no way in hell I'm dealing enough damage here." Then suddenly you hit a massive combo, the cards start chaining together, and you completely turn the tables. It feels incredibly satisfying.
That said, the game still needs some QoL improvements. The UI, especially in the shop, could be a lot more straightforward, and some of the power-up descriptions left me a bit lost on what they actually did. Also, a few stages felt less like a puzzle you have to solve and more like just praying to RNG. I know luck is always a factor in solitaire, but there were times it just felt way too dominant.
Rough edges aside, none of that ruined the experience for me. The core loop is simple and relaxing, and the bosses bring just enough tension so it doesn't feel like just another generic card game sitting in your library. It still has a few things to polish, but I really enjoyed it. For me, it’s the perfect casual game to keep installed and boot up whenever I have a few spare minutes.
